Studying at Cambridge

Emblem

The University’s emblem may be seen inter alia on many title pages issuing for several centuries from the University Press and on the Downing Street frontage of the Downing Site. It depicts a lactating lady holding in one hand a sun and in the other a chalice. It illustrates the University’s motto: Hinc lucem et pocula sacra. For a further discussion see Suzanne M. Eward, ‘Alma Mater Cantabrigiae: a device in print and plaster’, Proceedings of the Cambridge Antiquarian Society, 77 (137-43).
