Studying at Cambridge

Non-collegiate

Not being a member of a College. Non-collegiate students were those attached to the hostels founded in the late nineteenth century with a view to providing less expensive access to the University by an avoidance of college fees. Some of these hostels, like Ayerst Hostel and Cavendish College, disappeared; others, like Selwyn and Fitzwilliam House eventally assumed full collegiate status. Supervision of non-collegiate students was by the Censor of Non-Collegiate Students, latterly of Fitzwilliam House only.
